WHAT CAN A VISITOR EXPECT?

Visitors are always welcome at a Rostrum meeting. They are encouraged to come along, say hello, then sit back, observe, absorb and enjoy the social experience that is a typical meeting. You may visit as often as you like and you will not be expected to speak. The typical meeting is 1 to 1½ hours duration (depending upon the club) and is facilitated by a room chairman. The meeting itself comprises a series of exercises such as prepared speeches, impromptu discussions, topical questions, demonstrations, presentations and training sessions. Many clubs run short business sessions to practise meeting procedures. The meeting is structured to give the broadest participation by those in attendance and, whether the mood of the day or the moment be serious or just fun, the meeting will always be educational.

At the conclusion of each meeting, an experienced coach provides an evaluation of individual performances, identifying those skills members should promote and those which need further development to improve their presentations. The learning process is one of developing skills through practice over time.

WHAT CAN A NEW MEMBER EXPECT?

New members can expect a development structure tailored to suit the needs of each individual. Generally a member will undertake a standard development program covering all aspects of delivering a speech. The progress through this program will however be at a rate or pace determined by the member's comfort and confidence. Progression to higher levels of presentation skills and the development and practice in meeting procedures are at the discretion of the member.

New members can expect the support, encouragement and friendship of all other members. In addition, they can expect senior members to act as mentors in their development.

BEYOND THE CLUBS

Whilst the clubs are the centre of the learning process, Queensland Rostrum itself coordinates many activities and functions designed to enhance the overall Rostrum Experience enjoyed by its members.

Speaking Competitions

For those wishing to test their speaking prowess in a competitive environment, we have novice and open formal prepared speaking competitions, impromptu competitions and an after dinner style humorous speaking competition.

Annual Convention

For one weekend each year we come together to learn, to play and to socialise together.

Throughout the year, a variety of special functions are organised by various clubs to enhance the overall learning and social experience of members.
