Some frequently (and not-so-frequently) asked questions about Rostrum

Myths & Legends - Secret Handshakes?

Rostrum is not a secret society - we do not perform sacrifices on an altar!  We are not affiliated with any religious or political organisation.  Rostrum is a place to meet people and increase your own confidence and abilities, in a non-threatening atmosphere.

What happens at a Rostrum meeting?

That is like saying what happens at a concert!  Every meeting is different even within the same club.  But basically they all start off with a brief meeting and follow with speeches.   Depending on the culture / formality of the Club, the speech topic can be of your own choice or given to you by the Club Program Director.  Most Program Directors are looking for suggestions.

Do I have to get up and speak right away?

No, you are encouraged to go along to view different clubs as a visitor, decide which one suits you and, only when you decide to become a member, do you get to make a speech.

Discounts for Student Membership?

Young people are encouraged to join Rostrum and benefit from gaining personal skills in self expression, effective public speaking, and in the procedure of conducting meetings.   Students with a student card are charged half the normal DAIS levy. DAIS is the controlling body of Rostrum. Any other reductions are at the discretion of the Club. Clubs should use this opportunity to welcome young members into Rostrum.
