Take the Chair

Take the Chair was originally written in 1964 by Cec Carr and Alan Foyster both members of Rostrum, who saw a need for a book that described the rules of debate and meeting procedure in simple terms.

This book was revised and rewritten by David Price, Harold Luxton and Bill Smith.

This book went on to be one of the largest selling books on meeting procedures in Australia and over the years has sold over 90,000 copies. This edition has been written by three authors jointly and is essentially a new book.  The language and vocabulary has been updated to meet the needs of the 1990's as has the treatment of meetings and meeting procedures generally.  This edition includes a chapter on seminars and workshops and how they can run effectively.

A comprehensive referencing system and cross indexing makes this edition a book that can be handy and a ready reference for anyone who must chair a meeting.

The books remains a publication of Australian Rostrum and not only is the basis for the teaching of meeting procedures in Rostrum Clubs throughout Australia, but is widely accepted by the community as a valuable reference for those who participate in meetings.

Meeting procedure, is determined by any group of people working together to share information or make decisions.  Take the Chair provides a strong foundation from which organisations can build both positive and constructive rules of debate and guidelines for effective decision making.

Personal Development Program "PDP"

In 1986, Freeman John White, saw the need for a well designed program that enabled new members of Rostrum to work through a structured and sequential series of exercises.

following numerous trials and discussions a program was finalised for all new and existing members of Rostrum to follow.

The program is designed to progress through a series of exercises.  The exercises are designed and structured in a specific sequence so that members build their skills in an educationally sound manner and build confidence in public speaking and effective communication.

Once completed members graduate to the next program called the Intermediate Development Program "IDP".

To purchase copies of the PDP, IDP and/or ADP please click here for a copy of the order form.

Intermediate Development Program "IDP"

By now you will have first public recognition that your efforts to control nervousness and gain a modicum of self-confidence have been rewarded.

The Intermediate Development Program is a dynamic program that is designed to take that one step further.

This program is for the more experienced Rostrum member and includes a map of techniques on a variety of subjects. Each is designed to reinforce what you learned in the Personal Development Program and to teach skills that will be useful wherever you go and whatever you do.

To purchase copies of the PDP, IDP and/or ADP WA members please click here for a copy of the order form.

Advanced Development Program

It will have taken some time for members to arrive at this point.

This program is a more self assessed set of excerises where members accept or repeat stages based on known standards learned in previous training. Some involvement with Training Council will be required.

The PDP and IDP are totally club based, however some components of the ADP can be completed in an outside environment, giving members the ability to test skills away from the normal "comfort zone".
