Welcome to the latest edition of Rostrum Australia's newsletter, Taking ACTION. I hope you enjoy it.

From the President Feb 2022

Jenny Blain - President

Great feedback from members who have been motivated by ideas they gained through our 2021 National Networking events. So many interesting ideas shared. Don't miss out - keep your eyes on your emails. (Check that your Zone webmaster has you registered on the national website).

If you have an online training session planned in 2022 let us know if you wish to invite members from other Zones.  Victoria has kickied off with an early discussion session for club training officers (program directors, meeting organisers) on Friday 11th February and followed that with a "Online and Hybrid Meetings" training session. Share some great ideas and make your meetings zing! Log in to the website and check the video of the session if you missed it.

We are heavily focussing on membership for this year. Rod Black, national Secretary, is organising a call out to all our clubs for a membership drive. If you missed Rod's presentation you can see it here. What else? Well....

National Online Speaking Competition 2022

national online competition

The Australian Rostrum Council voted in 2021 to establish an annual national speaking competition where winners from heats in each of the Zones will compete to establish the national winner. The competition is currently being organised and will provide an additional opportunity for members to view the talent that exists in our Rostrum organisation. Talk to your Zone president about the details.

Rostrum national strategic engagement project

Market research project

As we are all aware, it is an ongoing priority to ensure the growth of Rostrum’s membership, in terms of the attraction and retention of members.

A recent initiative involving the engagement of two student project teams based at the Australian National University (ANU), in partnership with the Practera organisation, has resulted in the release of two Final Reports. The relationship with Practera was sponsored by a past member of Rostrum Victoria who saw an opportunity for Rostrum to engage with postgraduate volunteers in projects to assist with our strategic directions.

These reports focus on:

- growing Rostrum’s profile through high level strategic engagements across the community, and
- examining potential marketing approaches designed to maximise Rostrum’s outreach

Vale Eddie Fee - Past President Rostrum Australia

Many members of Rostrum attended Eddie’s celebration of life service at Riverside Baptist College, Seventeen Mile Rocks on Sunday 9th January.  Family members included son Cameron Fee, industrial psychologist, daughter Melita MacMahon, midwife, who lives in Armidale NSW, and her three children Alex, Georgia and Jessica. All three of Eddie’s grandchildren spoke beautifully. Cameron and Melita spoke fondly about their mother Beverley, former wife of Eddie.

Fmn Brian Korner delivered an excellent tribute on behalf of Rostrum Queensland.

Eddie was elected president of Queensland Rostrum in 1996 following a very keenly contested election campaign. He effectively led Queensland Rostrum for three years before taking on the role of National President for a subsequent three years. His dedication to Rostrum included his inauguration of the Eddie Fee After Dinner Speaking Competition in 2000.

Rostrum assists ACT primary school students return to normal

ACT Rostrum School Competition

Rostrum Speaking Competition in the ACT and Region Assists Primary School Students in their Return to Normal

Following a Covid lockdown delay of 2 months, the grand final of the Rostrum Primary School Public Speaking Competition, Kids Speak Out, was contested by 8 Primary School students on 8 November 2021 at Radford College to a reduced and appropriately spaced audience of 48.

The progress of the students through this Covid disrupted year was not easy. There were 92 entrant schools choosing their school champion through internal heats to proceed to one of twelve quarter finals conducted in Canberra, Cooma and Yass.

Co-founder of the competition, Dorothy Hine presented the Warren Hines Memorial Trophies to the winner Leo Richter of Chapman Primary School and the runner-up, Mia Buser of Mt Carmel School, Yass chosen by a panel of Rostrum qualified adjudicators. She also presented the People’s Choice trophy to Amelie Hitchcock of St Bede’s Primary School, Narrabundah chosen by vote of the audience.

Editor Paul Halliday

In 2022 there is an opportunity for new ideas for next stage of the Rostrum Taking ACTION Newsletter.  This is a great opportunity for some of our younger members to work in tandem with our newsletter editor using skills in image editing, copy writing, interviewing techniques and newsletter production.

Our invitation is to younger, more IT literate members to become the Editor or Co-Editor of Rostrum Taking ACTION for 2022. Perhaps each Rostrum Zone can nominate a co-Editor for a few months on rotation.

We have great leaders and need to support them with a long-term Newsletter and a strong link to other IT such as Facebook and Meetup etc.

Next Edition is April 2022 and submissions close 2nd April. newsletter@rostrum.com.au
