A Club in Focus - Club 17

Brisbane West Club 17 members step up to the plate

Five keen members of Club 17 fronted up at Moreton Bay College on 26 May to help with the South Queensland finals of Rostrum Voice of Youth.  Helping with the two Junior and two Senior finals, they variously filled the roles of chairman, adjudicator and timekeeper.  For new member Gary Cao, this was the first time he had assisted in the competition at such a senior level.

“I was really impressed and I really enjoyed listening to all the wonderful speakers.” he said.  All of us agreed that the speeches were all of a very high standard.  The State Final on 7 July promises to be a great event.

The Commonwealth Games Experience

The Commonwealth Games Experience

It was 20th March 2017 when I first heard the Gold Coast Games were receiving applications for volunteers. I thought what an exciting opportunity! So I applied on line.
In November I was asked to an interview at TAFE, where they asked me why I wanted to apply. I told them of the story of how I wanted to play basketball one day and we couldn't find a basketball court to play in publicly. I told them, I got the community together by getting them to help with an online petition to have a basketball court be placed close to the city. Sure enough, The Cairns City Council was able to get funding from the Commonwealth Games.

In January I received the email that I won the job! I was so excited. We had the basketball games in Cairns Convention Centre. My role was the Traffic Controller. I was able to use the skills I learnt from Rostrum to confidently direct people to their destination. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I'm so glad I was able to volunteer!

Rostrum Voice of Youth - a defining moment in my life

Andrea with Tapas and Tamana

In 1994 as a Year 10 student In Townsville, I entered the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition. It was my very first public speaking competition and I loved the experience. Especially the impromptu sections which we had to do back in those days even at heat level. I ended up doing very well and made it to the State Final where I came third. For my parents who migrated from Sri Lanka and my Sri Lankan community this was a great source of pride, of which they still talk about to this day.

After Rostrum I entered a number of Public Speaking Competitions in my Senior years of schooling. I was the North Queensland winner of Jaycees Youth Speaks for Australia, North Queensland Lions Public Speaker of the Year and in 1996 I won the Queensland State Final of the Plain English Speaking Awards and then came third at the National Finals. After finishing school I went on to study Law. During my University years I coached Debating teams in the Townsville Schools Competitions and I adjudicated many Public speaking competitions including Rostrum Voice of Youth. After becoming a Solicitor I entered a Public Speaking Competition for Solicitors in QLD. I won the QLD final and went on to represent Queensland at the National Final of the Golden Gavel Competition.

New Member Brings Poland to Rostrum Club 3

Wojciech Wachowski  was inducted into Rostrum Club 3 on 3 May 2018 by President Rosalie Roberts.

During Wojceich's first speech, Rostrum Club 3 Members learned that Mt Kosciuszko and Strzelecki Desert remember polish explorers - although the polish pronunciation is much different from the Australian vernacular (A reminder that in Rostrum fellowship we are always learning). Wojtek is an English linguistic PhD candidate spending time at University of Queensland.
