Rostrum’s Student Development Program for Secondary School Students.

The Competition

Rostrum Voice of Youth is a national public speaking competition, which provides an excellent opportunity for secondary school students to gain experience and confidence in expressing their views and communicating a message. Rostrum Voice of Youth has been proudly running since 1974, with 2024 marking our 50th anniversary.

In 2023, over 430 students from NSW representing 91 different schools entered the Rostrum Voice of Youth. Across Australia, there were over 900 participants.

Students first participate in Heats, typically held in their local area. The winners of each Heat will then progress to their respective Regional Final to be held in May. The winners of the Regional Finals will then compete at the NSW & ACT State Final, to be held in Sydney on 22 June 2024. Finally, State winners will have the honour of competing at the National Final, to be held in Hobart on 27 July 2024.

Format

At all levels of the competition, contestants are required to present a prepared speech. Juniors must present a 6-minute Prepared Speech (with warning bell at 5 minutes). Seniors must present an 8-minute Prepared Speech (with warning bell at 6 minutes).

Each school may enter up to three speakers in the Junior Division, and three speakers in the Senior Division. Contestants in the Junior Section must be at least 11 years of age as of 1 January 2024 and must be students in school years 7, 8 or 9. Contestants in the Senior Section must be under 18 years of age as of 1 January 2024 and must be students in school years 10, 11 or 12.

In addition, at the Regional Finals and the State Final, contestants present a 3 minute short-notice speech (with preparation time of 15 minutes). The Heats do not include a short-notice speech.
